Wanderlust and Lipstick Newsletter - October, 2007

October, 2007

Dear Wanderluster,

This month, I’m taking my show on the road and will be traveling down the West Coast for my fall book tour. If the weather cooperates, I’ll be traveling via motorcycle and will definitely be couchsurfing - connecting with new travel-loving friends through the likes of Couchsurfing and Global Freeloaders. Looking forward to meeting lots of new people and hope to see YOU at one of my events.

I begin this week in Moscow, Idaho and will be ping-ponging around the northwest for a couple of weeks to Seattle, Gig Harbor, Bellingham and Vancouver, B.C. I’m then off to Eugene and Medford, Oregon and end up in the Bay Area in late October/early November.Share Your Tips - Win Travel Stuff

Wander Recommendations

Travel Book
Unlikely DestinationsUnlikely Destinations by Tony Wheeler - With the news this week that Lonely Planet was just sold to the BBC, my review of this is quite timely. This book started out slow for me, with Tony going on about all the folks that he and Maureen met during their early travels, but it soon turned into a fascinating autobiography of their travels, relationship and business dealings, with all the ups and downs that come with all of those. A must read for every travel writer, publisher or LP fan.

World Music
Maskarada by Taraf de Haidouks - Like to be spun into a whirling dervish? These 12 gypsy musicians from a small Romanian village are just the group to put you into a tailspin. The CD is filled with energetic dance tunes and medieval ballads from the Balkans. Forget your aerobics class, toss this into your player for a bit of fun exercise.

World Film
Himalaya directed by Eric Valli - Shot way over budget and way past their schedule, this is an amazing story of the Dolpo people in Nepal. This movie pits tradition against modern ways of thinking within this traditional culture. Be sure to watch “The Making Of” on the DVD to see the difficulties the crew overcame to get this film to the screen.

Hot Travel Tip
My travel tip this month is actually a product recommendation.Ubu Jacket Although I’ll “tip” you gals off by saying - go buy yourself a jacket from Ubu Clothing (you be you)! They are ideal for travelers because they are reversible (makes ya feel like you’re traveling with more clothes than you are), they squish down to a very small size to fit into your luggage and they don’t wrinkle. They are also oh-so-classy looking.
