Wanderlust and Lipstick Newsletter - February 2008

February, 2008

I’ve returned (safe and sound) from a pretty amazing solo adventure through India. You can read about this month-long journey on my Wanderlust blog and Seattle PI blog. I’ll be adding more India entries in the coming weeks - I invite you to subscribe to these blogs so you don’t miss a beat.

In this issue, you can win a trip to Martinique, a subscription to travelgirl Magazine, help me grow our Wanderlust community, learn about the Wanderlust and Lipstick video series, sign up for a workshop and find out where to visit me in NYC! Phew… I’ve been busy!

Win a Trip to Martinique!
What if you were packing your bags right now for an island getaway rather than schlepping away on your computer at work? Look no further for this opportunity!

You can win a trip to Martinique, the French island of the Caribbean, by simply voting for my article on the French government’s website.

25 bloggers were invited to submit adventure stories for this contest. The blogger with the most votes wins a 7-day, all-inclusive trip to Martinique. AND, one voter will be randomly selected as well. That could be YOU!

Vote once, tell your friends, and let’s hope we both win!

Women Traveling with Children
Yes, indeed, it can be done. And our two ace travelers, Michelle (our WanderMom blogger) and Leslie (writer and editor extraordinaire) are working on a book to inspire and encourage travel with children.

Have you traveled with your babies, toddlers, tweens or teens? We’d love to hear your stories! Send me an email and we’ll set you up for an interview this spring.

Wander Recommendations

Travel Book
The Places in Between by Rory Stewart - Rory accompanied me on my trip to India and I couldn’t have asked for a better (book) companion. This is the memoir of his walk across Afghanistan in 2002 following in the footsteps of emperor Babur from the 15th century. It’s a wonderful read that left me feeling glad that I wasn’t the one (particularly as a woman) to embark on such an adventure but happy to have been an armchair reader for this journey.

World Music
Watina by Andy Palacio - This CD released last year to great fanfare, winning world music awards and accolades from music magazines and reviewers. An activist promoting the language, music and culture of the Garifuna people of Central America, Andy died late last month of a massive stroke at the age of 47. This music combines African beats and Caribbean reggae and includes a wide range of established Garifuna musicians. Well worth a listen.

World Film
Ma Vie En Rose directed by Alain Berliner - Though this is an older flick (1997 - thank you Netflix!), you wouldn’t know it from the topic. It’s the story of a young boy who wants, more than anything, to be a girl. In fact, he THINKS he is a girl. His family, understandably, struggles with this. The movie is a wonderful look at family bonds, parents’ love and the inevitable comedy and tragedy that flourishes with gender confusion.

Product Review
The new Essentials Jacket from Scottevest isn’t going to be the sexiest piece of clothing on your packing list but it could very well be the most practical. Wearing this through most of India, I spruced it up with a colorful scarf and tucked away all of my important items in the plethora of pockets (18 in all!). It’s machine washable and has zip-off sleeves for those unexpectedly warm days. Check out my full review for more info on its features and list of hidden pockets.
