Wanderlust and Lipstick Newsletter - August, 2007

Welcome Wanderlusters!Summer is the ideal time to stay IN Seattle, so my travels have been light except for a quick trip to upstate NY for a family reunion. Instead, I’m busy planning numerous upcoming trips.

In October, I will be motorcycling down the West Coast for book signing events and to chat with people about my book, Wanderlust and Lipstick: The Essential Guide for Women Traveling Solo. You can see my confirmed book signing dates here. Check back as details are still unfolding and I’d love to meet you in your city!

In January, I’ll be traveling back to India to research my next book, Wanderlust and Lipstick: The Essential Guide for Women Traveling to India.

Lastly, trip preparations are well underway for Bhutan in April when I’ll be leading a group of 12 through this small country in the Himalayas. Room is still available for this trip but interest has been high and I expect it to sell out quickly. Please email me for a detailed itinerary.

Wander Recommendations

Travel Book
Tales of a Female Nomad by Rita Golden Gelman- Whether you have trepidations about traveling or you’ve got lots of globe-trotting experience, you’ll never approach your travels the same way again after reading Rita’s book. She goes from a woman afraid of eating by herself in Mexico to a well-seasoned traveler easily immersing herself deep into other cultures with no common language to share.

World Music
Idan Raichel Project by Idan Raichel - An Israeli by birth, Idan Raichel worked with 70 musicians from around the world on this CD. The recording was created in his basement studio and draws upon Ethiopian chants, Caribbean rhythms, reggae and soulful lyrics. This CD is accessible in a pop sense yet it is completely ethereal.

World Film
Apocalypto by Mel Gibson - Yes, it’s bloody and graphic. But it’s also a beautifully filmed movie that follows the beginning of the demise of the highly sophisticated Mayan culture on the Yucatan Peninsula. Applause for presenting this movie in the native language and for hiring a cast of unknown actors. With the exception of a small handful, all actors were from Mexican and/or Native descent.

Hot Travel Tip
Always ask the locals. I knew this already but it was reinforced when Jon and I were driving around the country roads of upstate NY last week looking for pie. We popped into a TINY grocery store that offered only mass-produced, highly sugarized, whip cream overloaded sweets. We asked if there might be a place to buy fresh pies and the gal behind the deli counter quickly offered up directions to an Amish bulk food store with homemade pies just a few miles away. We would never have discovered the shop on our own. We were delighted to find the last two pies (peach and apple) as well as whoopie pies and 10 year-old aged cheddar cheese. Absolutely scrumptious.
