Happy Spring! Thanks to all of you Wanderlusters who have forwarded this newsletter and the For Women Traveling Solo website on to your friends and family. Together we’re creating a large community of women travelers through the Forums and Blog area. And soon there will be new features that will add to our continued growth. We love to travel and we love to share - thanks for participating!
Along with the tulips in my garden, lots of things are blooming in my neck of the woods. Most notably, I’m preparing to re-launch my website as www.WanderlustAndLipstick.com. As well as a new look, there will be many new additions to the site. I’m always open to ideas so if you have two cents, I’d love to hear your input!
Seeking a Few Good Bloggers
For the launch of the new site, I’m seeking a few select bloggers who would like to focus on a particular area of travel (eco-friendly, world music, travel & technology, etc.). With the growing community of travelers coming to the site, it’s an excellent opportunity to establish yourself as an expert on your favorite travel topic! Please contact me if you are interested. Travel Book
Sun After Dark: Flights into the Foreign by Pico Iyer. I thoroughly enjoyed this book while traveling in India. It consists of a series of short stories, mostly travel-related, in which Pico expertly examines his travels as well as his relationship to the rest of the world. He doesn’t dive deep into a destination per se, but dives deep into his (and our) psyche with regards to the destination.
World Music
La Cantina by Lila Downs. Lila’s style fluctuates between childlike playfulness and old woman groan as she sings ballads heard in the cantinas of Mexico. The music is at times complicated yet includes the “oompa” music you might hear bellowing from a Mexican restaurant in the U.S. Lila has managed to blend a traditional music form into a modern style that’s accessible. Because of the very unique way that Lila transforms her voice, I find this CD to be amusing.
World Film
City of God (Cidade de Deus) from Brazil. This 2002 release is the story of the intersecting lives of a group of young boys growing up in a barrio in Rio de Janeiro. It is a truly powerful film that includes a peek at the violence, drugs and struggle to survive that’s a part of their lives. This could easily be the story of a New York gang or of Bombay hoodlums, but the soundtrack probably wouldn’t be so wonderful!
Hot Travel Tip
Usually a travel tip includes what TO carry on a trip. However, my new friend, Jan recently shared her hot tip with me and it’s what NOT to carry. A mirror! Of course we want to look good on the road, but we’ll never look as fabulous as when we have our favorite clothes and lipstick on hand. Do yourself a favor: lose the mirror and relax!
