wanderlust and lipstick Newsletter - October, 2006

Dear Traveler,

Thanks to all of you who forwarded the September inaugural edition of the “For Women Traveling Solo” newsletter to your travel friends. The response to the newsletter and website was overwhelmingly positive and I’m happy to welcome aboard many new readers.

WIN Cool Gear
This month, win your choice of an item from the Solo Travel shop at Cafe Press. Choose from a tank top, coffee mug, hooded sweatshirt, and more. One item could be yours, here’s how:

BECOME A FORUM MEMBER - Sign up to become a member of the FORUM area during the month of October on For Women Traveling Solo AND post at least one message and you’ll automatically be entered to win one item from the Solo Travel Shop at CafĂ© Press. The Forum is for women to share travel-related questions and information. Find a travel partner, share a tip, or ask a question regarding a destination where you would like to travel. Your choice. Every time you post, your name gets dropped into the proverbial hat for a chance to win.

RECEIVE AN EMAIL ALERT FOR BETH’S BLOG - Sign up to receive an alert each time I add a post to my women’s travel blog. You’ll be alerted with a short email letting you know a new blog entry has been added. This is the easiest way to stay updated on travel concerns pertinent to women. You’re sure to be both entertained and informed. Become a savvy traveler by subscribing to my blog and you’ll be entered to win!

(Note that while you can enter both drawings, you may only win once. Winners will be alerted in next month’s newsletter.)

And now for the meat and potatoes (or in my case, the tofu and potatoes)… each monthly newsletter contains recommendations for travel books, world music, and perhaps a word or two of wisdom from the road.

Book Recommendation
Maiden Voyage by Tania Aebi. As I pored over my travel bookshelf trying to determine what book I should cover this month, Maiden Voyage stood out glaringly. While not a recent story, this book is the real life adventures of a teenager who set sail around the world, solo. Tania was the first woman and youngest person (at age 18) to complete this amazing journey. This book served as an inspiration to me when I myself was in my late teens and was planning and plotting my world adventures. (Tania also has a new book out, I’ve Been Around.)

World Music
Espiritu Vivo by Susana Baca. Peruvian singer Susana Baca first came to the world’s attention when David Byrne included her on a CD he produced in 1995 called The Soul of Black Peru. Shortly thereafter, she began releasing her own recordings and her career took flight. She is endowed with a beautifully soft voice that suits both traditional Peruvian folk songs as well as more modern songs which can be heard on this CD. She’s dedicated to preserving traditional Afro-Peruvian music and dance as the founder of the Centro Experimental de Musica Negrocontinuo (Institute of the Black Continuum).

She’ll be performing in Portland at the Aladdin Theater on October 25th and in Seattle from the 26th-29th at Jazz Alley.

Hot Travel Tip
OK, so I can’t exactly claim this as my own but this was recently shared with me and I love it. For those traveling with a laptop, you know how difficult it is to find an available electric outlet in an airport. Next trip, bring a multi-pronged adapter and ask to share with someone who’s already using an outlet!

Looking for Bloggers and Writers!
Planning a trip and want to share your adventures with friends and family? Soon, I will be a launching a blog for Solo Women Travelers where you can write about your very own travels. I’m also accepting stories for the Travel Tales section of For Women Traveling Solo. Drop me a line at beth at forwomentravelingsolo dot com and let me know how you’d like to participate.

Wanderlust and Lipstick: The Essential Guide for Women Traveling Solo
I’m nearly ready to go to print, let me know if you’d like an advance copy of my forthcoming book!
