wanderlust and lipstick Newsletter - December, 2006
Dear Traveler,
In an effort to keep this issue brief and allow you to get back to your holiday happenings, I’ll dive right into the meat and potatoes (or in my case, the tempe and brown rice)… each monthly newsletter contains recommendations for a travel book, a world music CD and perhaps a word or two of wisdom from the road.
Book Recommendation
Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder. This very moving book is the biography of Doctor Paul Farmer, a tuberculosis specialist who has transformed healthcare in Haiti. He all but moves mountains to; visit patients in remote villages, raise money to fund his medical clinic and help expand his successes in other parts of the world, including Peru and Russia. He and his team have changed the way infectious diseases are evaluated and treated around the world and Farmer does so in a an incredibly humble fashion. Very well written and researched, I was pleasantly surprised by this book which could have been a soapbox for Dokte (as the Haitians call him) Paul’s successes but instead includes his shortcomings as well.
World Music
Cru by Seu Jorge. If you saw the very quirky movie, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, you may recognize the voice and guitar playing of Seu Jorge. He often popped up singing David Bowie songs in Portuguese with heavy Brazilian overtones and Cru (Raw, in Portuguese) is all Brazil, all the time. Jorge, hailing from the slums of Rio, has hit it with this fabulous CD. In a recent interview with Songlines Magazine, Jorge downplays his newfound stardom since appearing in the movie, City of God. “When I was poor, everyone thought I was ugly and uninteresting. Now I am handsome and cool. What’s changed? Not me…” Yeah, he’s pretty much the epitome of cool and this chill-out CD will help you feel cool, too.
Hot Travel Tip
If you’re traveling this holiday season, arrive early to the airport and expect long lines and delays. With the TSA’s ever-changing list of restricted items allowed in your carry-on, there will be lots of slow-downs as travelers get caught unloading their bottles of shampoo, perfume and shaving cream. Check the TSA’s website for their most recent restrictions and suggestions.
