5 Tips for Saving Money During Your Travels

December 3rd, 2007

With the falling U.S. dollar, we’re all getting a bit worried about the cost of travel. Even if your money isn’t going as far as you’d like, there are some things you can do to help stretch it just a wee bit farther. Here are five tips for saving money while you’re traveling that are taken directly from my book, Wanderlust and Lipstick: The Essential Guide for Women Traveling Solo.

1. Share rides to and from the airport with other travelers. Often they are just as happy as you are to split the cost.

2. When you meet another traveler you like, ask to share a room or taxi ride to your next destination. Go ahead, put yourself out there!

3. Stay in hotels where breakfast is included. Buffets are generally served so you can fill up on a hearty breakfast and then eat light for the rest of the day.

4. Always ask for a better price, no matter what you are purchasing. Whether it’s a hotel room or a souvenir purchased at an open air market, sometimes all it takes is a smile and a request for a lower price.

5. Look over your receipts at restaurants, hotels, grocery stores and shops to make sure you haven’t been overcharged. There might be a simple accounting error or you may be taken advantage of as a tourist. Either way, take it in stride and politely point out the mistake.

Happy Travels!

Great advice.

Traveling in the US, we often pick up some breakfasty sort of thing in a nearby market when we’re traveling, having a little yogurt or instant oatmeal in the hotel room charges up the day and saves money for other things.

Also we sometimes have our big meal midday as lunch often costs a few bucks less than dinner.
