Chinese Toothpaste Recalled from Luxury Hotels

August 14th, 2007

Gilchrist & Soames provides toiletries for luxury hotels around the world. They supply the products in those nifty little bottles of shampoo, conditioner and toothpaste.

Gilchrist & Soames

Monday, the company announced that it will be recalling its toothpaste made in China. This London-based company is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on this voluntary recall. After the FDA announced on June 1 that imported Chinese toothpaste may be tainted, the company ran tests on their toothpaste and immediately ceased shipping product to hotels.

The company conducted their own independent testing and in doing so, they discovered a poisonous chemical, diethylene glycol (DEG), in their imported toothpaste. DEG is found in antifreeze and can harm the liver and kidney.

Hotels affected by the recall are located in Barbados, Belgium, Bermuda, Canada, Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland, Turks & Caicos, the United Arab Emirates, the U.K. and the U.S.

The company has an “Environmental Policy” and “Cruelty-Free Policy” listed on their website. They manufacture in environmentally friendly bottles and don’t allow their products to be tested on animals. I don’t expect all companies to be perfect, but it seems ironic that they pay more attention to what their product goes in to and whether animals are harmed in the process but they haven’t looked at the ingredients going into the products.

Happy Travels!
