3 Years is the New 2-Week Vacation

July 6th, 2007

There’s a trend going on here.

Last night, Jon and I got together with our friend, Dave, who is leaving in September on an estimated 2-3 year journey on his bicycle from Seattle to South America. Earlier this week, I got together with Trish, who is planning to travel for the next 3 years. And at the last workshop for women travelers that I taught at the University of Washington, a gal in my class was saving so that she, too, could travel for a few years.

In ‘92, I did travel for a year around the Pacific Rim. I put my things in storage and took off with my overstuffed backpack. In Vietnam, I met a French woman who had been traveling around the world on her bicycle. She had already been gone for a couple of years and she didn’t know when she was going to return home. Even though I was on my own adventure, to be gone for years was unthinkable to me back then.

But it seems a few years is the new 2-week vacation!

There are many others who have done this, to be sure, and lots of people out there now. Dave had heard that at any given time there are about 100 people doing the same North to South America bicycle trip that he is planning. Many start in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, however.

Never say never, but I’m just a bit too lazy to hop on a bicycle to make my way around the globe. Now, on a motorcycle… that’s a completely different story!

Happy Travels!
