The Unique Architecture of Bhutan

Bumthang Dzong View

It’s really difficult to capture the beauty of Bhutan in photos. It’s ethereal. It’s magical. And the country should be on everyone’s list of must-see destinations.

As I was looking through my images, I had a strong urge to share them ALL with you. But in the interest of bandwidth and time, I thought it best to pull just a few at a time to share :-)

To start, here’s a look at some of the architecture.

The above is taken from a hill that looks out over a couple of dzongs (monasteries) in the Bumthang Valley.

Bumthang Dzong

Here’s the front view of the dzong shown above.

Dochula Pass

Dochu La Pass marks a point where there are 108 chortens (stupas) dedicated to those who died in a battle in the early 2000′s in a skirmish against Indian militants. On a clear day (despite the blue sky, this wasn’t considered a clear day), you can see the snow-capped Himalayas.

Parliament in Thimphu

This is the Parliament building in Thimphu. It sits in the valley surrounded by the growing city of Thimphu and the always beautiful Himalayan foothills.

Thimphu Dzong

This is the dzong in Thimphu. It’s closed during the week but we happened to be there on the weekend and were able to take a peek inside. Unfortunately, there were no photos allowed inside so this is all you get to see (unless you go there yourself!).

More Bhutan photos coming soon…

Travel Well!

These are great photos – I can’t wait to go to Bhutan. The architecture seems to share many similarities to Tibetan architecture – I look forward to further exploring the connections!
