Photo of the Day: Southwest Tchotchkes

Adobe Suns

It’s been such a long cold winter that I nearly forgot what the sun looks like. It’s just recently started to pop out now and again in Seattle and I feel so happy to see blue sky and shadows. It made want to share some sunshine of a different kind. I found these at a shop in San Diego that was filled with all sorts of Southwest tchotchkes.

Frida Boxes

In addition to the wall of suns, inside the shop there were lots of little boxes and wall hangings featuring Frida Kahlo and other iconic Mexican images (is that Diego Rivera?). I was in heaven. I must have lived a previous life in Mexico and always feel right at home with a tamale and Mexican goodies.

I love it!! We had tons of those ceramic suns around our house growing up (we lived in New Mexico for years and later passed through every summer from Texas to Granny’s house in Southern Utah. Those suns were ubiquitous there!) Brings back great memories!

I always feel right at home in Mexico, too, and so I brought a bit of Mexico home with me from Oaxaca to Seattle and am creating a Mexican-inspired patio. My fence looks like a sparser version of the top photo!
