New York! Just Like I Pictured It!
Is there ANYTHING better in the world than a hot, salt-covered pretzel from a street vendor in NYC?
Nope.
I’m here for the New York Times Travel Show, where I spoke on a panel about how to make your travel dreams a reality. Joining me on the panel were Ben Horton, the first recipient of National Geographic’s young explorers award; Andrew Evans, author of Bradt’s guide to Iceland (among a number of other books), and Paul Bennett of Context Travel, specializing in scholar-led walks around the globe. Anouk Zijlma, of About.com’s guide to Africa, was our fabulous moderator.
I was thrilled to be part of such an experienced panel of travelers and found myself taking notes and making lists of journeys I must now take, including Iceland and a motorcycle trip through Asia. These folks have all done a wide range of travel and it’s obvious that they’re not slowing down. Ben mentioned that, with the state of the economy, he’s been thinking about just taking off for a couple of years and returning when things calm down. I LIKE that line of thinking!
In her opening introduction, Anouk noted how our travel journeys change throughout our lives. I know I’ve become MORE adventurous as I continue to test my limits but some might become more conservative as they get older. How ’bout you?

I LOVE Anouk’s newsletters.
At 50, (well, 49 and 10 months)I am more a more adventurous than I was in the past. I worked as an adventure travel escort all over Latin America, but after five years of planning “soft adventure” for others, my husband and I began to “do our own thang”. Now we backpack in the Himalaya, jump out of planes in New Zealand and kayak down the Mekong! I think adventure becomes more important as we age. it keeps us in check with our own mortality.
