India – Rajasthan Highlights

by Beth Whitman - Wanderluster (December 10th, 2009)

I’m terribly late in posting about the fantastic 5 weeks I spent in India and Bhutan. I’ve been a little distracted, to say the least, with Passports with Purpose and all. (Check it out if you haven’t already.)

But, I have been poring over images from both trips and it’s time to share!

The India group visited Delhi, Varanasi, Agra and multiple areas of Rajasthan, including Jodhpur, Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Pushkar and Udaipur. Here’s a smattering of images to give you an idea what to expect in the majestic region of Rajasthan…

Sarah with woman in Jaisalmer

This was typical of how we were welcomed all over northern India. People loved to have their pictures taken with the group and they enthusiastically embraced us all – especially Sarah, above :-)

Women Village

This was a women making chapati (flatbread) in a village near Rohet Garh which lies about halfway between Jaisalmer and Udaipur. It was interesting to see this but it did feel a bit staged. Wander around any city and you can see vendors doing the same for customers. Still, a lovely pic.

Jodhpur View

For obvious reasons, Jodhpur is nicknamed the Blue City for the buildings painted in indigo. This is a late afternoon view from the Meherangarh Fort.

Mughal Doorway

The architecture throughout Rajasthan is spectacular. The Mughal style is a mixture of Persian, Islamic and Indian influences. These doorways are in the Meherangarh Fort.

Pushkar Women

It’s not uncommon throughout India to see women dressed in beautiful saris doing difficult work. These women are carrying heavy loads on their heads at the Pushkar Camel Fair.

Ranakpur women

Fortunately, there is time for relaxing, too. These gals were at the Jain temple in Ranakpur. It was a festival day so the temple was filled with worshippers.
