I make a point of only buying those these days. Another big point: choose which businesses you support. If you come across ones that are doing the right thing by the environment, then take your business there. This sends a clear message that you care about these issues and other businesses will follow suit. Unfortunately, I think all too often we think, "If the locals don't care, why should I?" The problem is that the locals just don't know the potential results of these cumulative actions. It's amazing to me how much bottled water even supposedly enlightened travelers will buy and go through on a weekly basis, even when they know there's no local means to recycle all that plastic. It's deplorable. Carry a purifier, carry a reusable shopping bag, buy beer and soda in returnable bottles. Those three things alone will cut your waste by 2/3.
