(Full disclosure – I’m back from India, safe and sound, and am now catching up on my blog posts.)
I gave myself a few days in Delhi so as to do some souvenir shopping and to visit with a few new friends. One of these new friends was Sumitra Senapaty, owner of Women on Wanderlust. Sumitra and I have been emailing with each other over the last eight months or so, ever since I discovered her company and mission, and blogged about it.
Sumitra at the Taj
Women on Wanderlust (WOW) is a tour company that caters to women from all over India and brings them on some fabulous adventures. Upcoming trips include Egypt, New Zealand and Turkey. Sumitra has quite the following of women eager to join her “club”.
This is an amazing trend in India, where the middle class is growing and is finding new ways to spend their money and where women are enjoying more freedoms than they ever have in this male-dominated society.
Sumitra has traveled around the world on her own (a gal after my own heart) and, through WOW, wants to provide an opportunity for other women to see the world.
We spent a day together as we drove (four hours one way) to Agra so that I could have some photos taken of me in front of the Taj for my forthcoming book. John, whom I had met at the Wongdhen House, tagged along and ended up being my photographer on the trip. Here’s his blog if you’d like a different perspective of India.
Anyhoo, the trip to Agra and back was lovely. I’m completely impressed with Sumitra and her foresight into travel trends and in creating a successful business that encourages travel amongst women who haven’t had the opportunity to do so in the past. She’s even co-sponsored, along with one of the up and coming wine producers in India, wine tasting events in Bangalore. She’s living the life!
Go Sumitra!

I lived in the US (Oregon and the bay area) for 30+ years and returned to India to retire. WOW “Women on Wunderlust) has done wonders form my life. I have done six trips ( laddakh, hiking trip in the himalayas, Corbett Nationla Park, Rajashtan, Soth Africa and Egypt) with Sumitra and they have all been fabulous. Her choice of hotels and sight seeing choices are what keeps me going back to WOW. In addition to all the travel I have done with wow, they have become an extended family for me. I have lost a lot of family in the last 3 years and they have been there for me all the way. I am moving to B’lore, I already have wow women taking care of me and my needs. The female bonding is what makes these trips so very special. Besides, these free spirited women make you want to come back as a woman in your next life as well.
