You may have heard about landing in Paro, Bhutan. It’s a thrill ride, for sure, as the Druk Air plane banks between Himalayan foothills, gently landing on the short runway at Bhutan’s only airport. Truth be told, it wasn’t quite as scary as I had anticipated (I’ll be posting a video of our landing soon).

After meeting our Bhutanese guide, Tshering, we piled into a mini-bus and were all immediately enthralled with the sites that lay between the airport and our hotel.

First stop, just minutes down the road, was the Paro Dzong. You might recognize this from the movie, The Little Buddha. This building is typical of the architecture we found throughout the country and is the seat of the local government.

Immediately upon arriving at the Kichu Resort, we enjoyed a breakfast of eggs, toast and tea/coffee (ugh, Nescafe, which we were served everywhere). We soon learned that tea/coffee (always said as one word), would become one of our favorite breaks because it was usually served with yummy crackers and sweet biscuits.

Despite having been up since 2am-ish, we were all excited to get started with our tour. After freshening up, we we were off to our first little trek…
