Streets of Udaipur

by Beth Whitman (February 2nd, 2007)

Udaipur, in the state of Rajasthan, has undoubtedly been the highlight of this trip.

Peaceful, serene and romantic are descriptions that easily come to mind.

On our last morning there, we walked the streets and got away from the tourist areas to find street vendors, cafes and restaurants geared more towards the locals.

Here’s a sampling of what we found…

jooti

“Royal” shoes or jooties. These were fashioned after what royal families wore and we still saw plenty of locals wearing shoes similar to these (although these were a bit geared towards tourist traffic).

ghee

A street vendor plies the streets with tins of ghee, clarified butter used in cooking.

jaggary

Jaggery is used as an unrefined sweetener used throughout India and is sold in big chunks, as this woman is doing by cart. Jaggery is referred to as the sugar from either sugarcane or date palm.

Happy Travels!
